Summary

Two moms as opposite as a Happy Meal and a quinoa bowl。 What a difference a week makes in a heartfelt, laugh-out-loud novel by the Washington Post bestselling author of The Overdue Life of Amy Byler

Celeste Mason is the Pinterest stay-at-home supermom of other mothers’ nightmares。 Despite her all-organic, SunButter-loving, free-range kids, her immaculate home, and her volunteering awards, she still has time to relax with a nice glass of pinot at the end of the day。 The only thing that ruins it all is her workaholic, career-obsessed neighbor, who makes no secret of what she thinks of Celeste’s life choices every chance she gets。

Wendy Charles is a celebrated productivity consultant, columnist, and speaker。 On a minute-by-minute schedule, she makes the working-mom hustle look easy。 She even spends at least one waking hour a day with her kids。 She’s not apologizing for a thing。 Especially to Celeste, who plays her superior parenting against Wendy whenever she can。

Who do Celeste and Wendy think they are? They’re about to find out thanks to one freaky week。 After a neighborhood potluck and too much sangria, they wake up—um, what?—in each other’s bodies。 Everything Celeste and Wendy thought they knew about the “other kind of mom” is flipped upside down—along with their messy, complicated, maybe not so different lives。

Fun, fast read。

I started reading the book not knowing anything about what it was about。 As I read I was not sure I liked the idea of reading another Freaky Friday story but the writer drew me in and kept my attention。 I knew I had to finish reading the story。 Her descriptions of everyday life was so realistic and I was hooked。 The story is funny at times and full of emotion。 You get connected to the characters by understanding and empathy, and sometimes, sympathy。 Good read!

Mommy wars subversionThis is fiction geared toward women, but the message is one we all need to be reminded of in our age of snap judgments & ready condemnations - don't judge someone till you've walked a mile in their shoes。 And while at times the story is entertaining, sometimes it's a long mile。 If you're a stressed out mom - whether working outside the home or inside the home - you may have to grit your teeth as the first 15% of the book sets up the story & introduces the 2 unhappy heroines。 Mommy wars subversionThis is fiction geared toward women, but the message is one we all need to be reminded of in our age of snap judgments & ready condemnations - don't judge someone till you've walked a mile in their shoes。 And while at times the story is entertaining, sometimes it's a long mile。 If you're a stressed out mom - whether working outside the home or inside the home - you may have to grit your teeth as the first 15% of the book sets up the story & introduces the 2 unhappy heroines。 Celeste is judgmental, but she's self aware & tries to rein it in; Wendy is a witch so often that it's hard to feel sympathy for her even after coming to know her motivations。 Their lives are full of all the wide varieties of stress that are available to make life more challenging - and that we read to escape from! Hang in there! When the switch occurs, it's both awkward & amusing as you would expect。 It gets to feeling a little boggy as they work their way thru their prejudices, and we follow their evolving thought processes。 It poses some good food for thought about respecting our differences, finding satisfaction in what we do, & what it means to be a good parent。 Much of the comedic stems from the perspectives on stereotypical ideals vs practical realities - yet, ironically, Celeste & Wendy are themselves stereotypes here。 And at times, the author's reach for the comedic crosses over into a cynicism that's more dark than funny。 The ending is satisfying at a secular level, but ironically there's a smug patness to the resolution that wasn't totally honest (don't want to spoil it) & kept it from being quite as good as it could have been。 Nevertheless, it's imperfections didn't keep me from enjoying the story & the philosophical trail it took me down, so unless any of those flaws are dealbreakers for you, I recommend it! POTENTIAL CONTENT ISSUESSex: secular attitudes/beliefs on marriage & infidelity, frank talk about bodies & sex but of the mom life variety - not salacious & nothing graphic (about a PG-13 level if it were a movie) Language: not a lot of swears, but does include 5 f-bombs Religion: a couple dozen careless uses of the Lord's Name (ie in vain) including 5 as curses, sadly & unnecessarily Political: There's some background level PC messages on women/misogyny but not overly in your face about it。 Racist, eugenicist Margaret Sanger is listed by a character as a hero of the feminist movement 。。。more

Mom Wars Freaky FridayI’ve always enjoyed the “Freaky Friday” trope since I saw the original when I was a child back in the 1970s。 This one happens between two neighbor women who couldn’t be more opposite from each other。 And not just because one’s a stay-at-home mom and the other is a working productivity expert who financially supports her family。 They also differ in basic life philosophy, which naturally ripples through other aspects of their lives and choices they make, including parenting s Mom Wars Freaky FridayI’ve always enjoyed the “Freaky Friday” trope since I saw the original when I was a child back in the 1970s。 This one happens between two neighbor women who couldn’t be more opposite from each other。 And not just because one’s a stay-at-home mom and the other is a working productivity expert who financially supports her family。 They also differ in basic life philosophy, which naturally ripples through other aspects of their lives and choices they make, including parenting styles and marital interactions。 The book has laugh-out-loud moments and poignant ones as these women try to live each other’s lives (as they try to figure out how to switch back)… all the while not letting on to their kids and spouses that the switch has happened。 Both come to a better appreciation of the other… and their choices。 As in the real-life Mommy Wars, no one-size-fits-all path is best for everyone。 As the characters do in the end, respect and appreciation for each other is the best path forward for us all。I received an ARC copy of this book, but that did not affect my review。My book blog: https://www。readingfanaticreviews。com 。。。more

This story is a modern day twist on Freaky Friday。 Two neighbors compete over the best sangria and wake up in each other’s bodies。 One, a stay at home mom; the other is a working professional。 You will feel a myriad of emotions - from frustrated, to warm and fuzzy, and everything in between。 It is a heartfelt story I thoroughly enjoyed。 The two excepts below are from the book that sum it up nicely。 Enjoy。“We are friends, all of us, as all, highly efficient cluster of overworked, over tired women This story is a modern day twist on Freaky Friday。 Two neighbors compete over the best sangria and wake up in each other’s bodies。 One, a stay at home mom; the other is a working professional。 You will feel a myriad of emotions - from frustrated, to warm and fuzzy, and everything in between。 It is a heartfelt story I thoroughly enjoyed。 The two excepts below are from the book that sum it up nicely。 Enjoy。“We are friends, all of us, as all, highly efficient cluster of overworked, over tired women who will do anything for their children。”“Both of us work hard, lived tired, and struggle with the culture of unreasonable expectations for women。” 。。。more

This novel was hilarious throughout and the characters reminded me of people I have known。 The over the top stay at home mom and the over the top working mom switch places。 Very funny and kind of sad at the same time as they realize the shortcomings of their own lives and how to appreciate the life of the other mom。 Very enjoyable with relatable points in both women。

Stay at home mom (SAH) Celeste and business owner/working mom Wendy end up in each other’s bodies after drinking too many sangrias one night。 These moms could not be more different, not just in their choice of career, but also in their choice of husbands, child-rearing methods and lifestyle。 Celeste bakes cupcakes for every school event, sews her daughter clothes, packs gourmet homemade lunches, cooks healthy dinners every night, keeps chore charts and is signed up for every committee there is。 Stay at home mom (SAH) Celeste and business owner/working mom Wendy end up in each other’s bodies after drinking too many sangrias one night。 These moms could not be more different, not just in their choice of career, but also in their choice of husbands, child-rearing methods and lifestyle。 Celeste bakes cupcakes for every school event, sews her daughter clothes, packs gourmet homemade lunches, cooks healthy dinners every night, keeps chore charts and is signed up for every committee there is。 Wendy is an organized, put-together, self-motivated and driven type-A personality that successfully runs her own business while simultaneously managing homework, school meetings, picking up dinner and getting the kids to activities as basically a single mom。 She finds it easier to do everything around the house herself rather than ask her husband or kids to help。 This book was the ultimate exploration into mommy wars。 Celeste feels the pressure to be a perfect mom。 She feels responsible for signing up for all the volunteer opportunities, driving everyone’s kids where they need to be and for keeping her family happy and healthy。 Wendy, on the other hand, feels responsible for the financial well-being of her family, for modeling a successful career for her kids and for keeping her family happy and healthy。 Both are moms who love their kids unconditionally, and would sacrifice their own happiness for their wellbeing。 The fun part was watching them try to figure out how to live in each other’s bodies without anyone knowing - until they could figure out how to switch back。Coming from a background as both a stay at home mom and a working mom, I found this book to be spot on in its descriptions of the way moms unfortunately judge each other and their choices。 This book did an excellent job of showing how preconceived notions need to be discarded as unreliable。 You know the saying, “you can’t judge someone’s life until you’ve walked in their shoes?” This story put that question into action, while infusing humor and insight。Both women spent time prior to the switch looking at each other with a certain amount of disdain。 It takes living inside each other’s lives for them to realize their misplaced judgments and to see the value and necessity in each other’s choices。 Some beautiful realizations happened and both moms were able to leave a little of their own mark on their “borrowed” family。 Each woman finally recognized the strength and devotion every mom inherently possesses。 The question is not which mom’s choices are right, but instead, how both moms’ choices are right for their family。 Thank you to KateRock Book tours and Lake Union Publishing for the advance copy to read and review。 I easily recommend。 。。。more

This is a Freaky Friday type story of two moms in a neighborhood who end up switching places。 I think this story is best suited for moms, as it goes into working moms vs。 stay at home moms and mom guilt。Seth is the worst and it was hard for me to feel any sympathy towards him。A big thank you to Kate Rock Book Tours and Kelly Harms for the ARC!

This is going to be a definite summer hit! 。。。more
